Sigma has announced a release of the Sigma APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG HSM and the Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG HSM for the Pentax KAF2 mount. The scheduled release date is 14th December 2008. European retailers list the 150-500 at around the 700-800€ mark and the 120-400 at around 600€.

Kaikessa muuttoon liittyvässä hässäkässä valokuvaus ja kuvankäsittely ovat olleet pitkään täysin laiminlyötyinä. Useasti eri tilanteissa on tullut mieleen: “Olisipa nyt kamera mukana”. Jos kamera on ollut mukana, niin on muka ollut liian kiire pysähtyä ottamaan kuvaa. Mitä hölmöilyä. 

Ikeasta tuli ostettua muutama 50×70cm kehys, joista yksi on menossa joululahjaksi. MInun piti siis kahlata läpi kaikki kuvani ja yrittää valikoida niistä omalle ja vieraalle seinälle sopivia. Alle vuoden kuvailullakin valtava urakka, joka söi yöunia aika reippaalla kädellä. Tuloksena oli 167 kuvan joukko, josta ruveta karsimaan edelleen. Kyllä sieltä ehkä joku löytyy, jonka kelpuuttaisin omalle seinälle. Harvempi, jota kehtaa vieraalle (tai edes omalle veljelle) tuputtaa.

Silmiin pisti tämä kuva, joka on sellaisenaankin erittäin lähellä nykyään melko yleistä valikoivan saturoinnin tyyliä. Yleisesti käytetty nimitys “Valikoiva desaturaatio” (selective desaturation) on huono nimitys, jos suuri osa kuvaa on desaturoitu ja joku yksityiskohta on väreillä. Nimitän tätä mielessäni “Ikea-desaturoinniksi”, koska Ikeassa myydään isoja sisustustauluja, joissa tekniikkaa on käytetty. Päätin siis kokeilla uuden (minulle, LR2 on ollut saatavilla jo pitkän tovin) Lightroomin maskaus-toimintoja ja koska mistään valokuvaukseen liittyvästä näpertämisestä on jo pitkä aika, niin päätin kirjoittaa siitä myös blogipostin.

Aluksi vedin raakasti kuvan yli isolla harjalla jossa Flow oli 100 ja auto-mask poissa päältä. Sitten kumitin sen oranssin muovipussin osalta (joka tosiaan on tuon värinen alunperinkin) ja tein sille oman maskin, jolla terävoitin sitä hieman enemmän kuin muuta osaa.

En tiedä miksi, mutta en halua laittaa raakakuvia näytille kuvista, joita olen käsitellyt. Pelkoa siitä, että joku tuomitsee käsittelyn vain huonontaneen kuvaa? Kuka tietää. No, näillä näkymin tämän blogin kuvia tulee arvioida itsenäisinä olioina. Omasta mielestäni tulos ei ole yhtään hullumpi, koska tekniikan käyttö tukee aihetta. Jos nyt johonkin olisi voinut panostaa, niin mustavalkokäännökseen.

Sigma 50-500/5-6.3

Update: a UK pentax distributor has stated the following release schedule for the 120-400 and 150-500:

120-400 & 150-500 - Due late November. These are SDM lenses but don’t have an image stabiliser built in.

At the beginning of this year, Sigma announced two new tele zooms, the Sigma APO 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM and the Sigma APO 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM, both of which were to be available for the Pentax mount.

Pentax users are used to having to wait longer than users of other mounts for third party lens support, a good case in point being the Sigma 70-200/2.8 and Tamron 70-200/2.8, both of which were a long time coming for the K-mount. Now an omission of any mention for Pentax support for these lenses in the Sigma lenses page of Sigma Corporation of America is having some Pentax users guessing, wether the lenses will be available for Pentax at all.

Bird tower in Porvoo

Yesterday’s trip took us to photograph the fall nature in Porvoo. We visited two of Porvoo’s bird towers (that were empty of bird spotters at this time of the year), and managed to only catch a few distant crows and ducks on the sensor. On our way to another bird tower, we spotted a family of mute swans, of which we didn’t get any great photographs, either.

Still, the whole trip resulted in some quite good pictures of the dying fall nature. Something in the subject of dying nature emphasises my tendency of making contrasty, dark and brooding pictures. Let’s just hope someone finds my handling of the theme fitting.

All in all we saw:

• A couple of bird towers
• Castle hill with it’s motes
• Crows, ducks and swans
• Reeds, swamp and forest
• A spreading bellflower

Vuoden luontokuva on taas julkistettu ja raati jatkaa kontroversaalia linjaansa. Jotain kertoo ehkä se, että Iltalehden (tuon maanmainion valokuvamedian) äänestyksessä tällä hetkellä 83% vastaajista ei pidä voittajaa luontokuvana.

Olen sattumoisin tuon äänestyksen enemmistön kanssa samaa mieltä, enkä aiempinakaan vuosina ole täysin allekirjoittanut voittaneiden kuvien valintaa. Siitä huolimatta on pakko ihailla Vuoden Luontokuva- kilpailun linjaa, joka tänä kalustopanoitteisen harrastuksen kulta-aikana on ottanut linjakseen tuoda esiin muita valokuvan arvoja, kuin teknisen täydellisyyden ja kohinattomuuden. Mielestäni valinta on oikeutettu, jos sillä saadan ravisteltua edes joku miettimään valokuvan olemusta muultakin kantilta, kuin zoomaamalla kuva 200%:n ja tarkastelemalla sen sisältämää kohinaa.

Muiden voittajien valinnat noudattelevat perinteisempää linjaa. Vuoden luontokuvan voittaja on hyvä valokuva: hyvin nähty, hyvin sommiteltu ja dramaattinen. Silti siinä on mielestäni koko lailla vähän ominaisuuksia, jotka itse liitän luontokuvaan: sen ottaminen ei ole vaatinut lainkaan luonnon tuntemusta, kuvaa ei voida sanoa teknisesti erinomaiseksi. Vaikea sitä on kutsua luonnossa otetuksi, edes kaupunkiluonnossa.

Myöskään kuvan kannalta toisarvoisia seikkoja, kuten ponnistelu ja raadanta kuvan saamiseksi, jotka ovat silti monien silmissiä luontokuvan arvostusta rakentavia, on minimoitu. Kuvaajahan myöntää lavastaneensa kuvan. Valitaanko seuraavaksi vuoden luontokuvaksi pönöttämään aseteltu kesy karhu?

I ran into this picture while going through the image database I had accumulated in about a year of shooting. The photograph gave me conflicting feelings, because out of the camera, it was not much of a photograph, but I felt there was something inside the picture that wanted out. Something cold, dark, violent. When I accepted that the image would not end up as a pretty landscape picture, the picture took it’s final form in a very short time.

After a thorough cleaning, I decided to take a little stab at shooting interior decoration. The photograph is from our bedroom and I used the bedside table lamps to create a warm atmosphere. The ambient interior lighting was combined with the sunny autumn scene outside. I shot two exposures on a tripod, for the interior lighting 0.4 seconds at f/9.0 andr for the outside lighting 1/40 seconds at f/9.0. I didn’t want an artificial HDR look, and didn’t want to stitch the exposures manually in Photoshop either, so I tried (for the first time) the enfuse tool which is part of the PanoTools package.

For a quick test, I have to say, the output is very much to my liking. The only serious flaw in the image is the two narrow field of view, shot at 18mm using the Tamron 18-250/3.5-6.3. A sigma 10-20/4-5.6 or Pentax 12-24/4 would have served a lot better.

A Pentax 645D prototype with 31Mp Kodak CCD sensor

A poster in a german photography form fanned the flames in the Pro Pentax rumour mill with a post that claims a Pentax salesperson in the Photokina 2008 Pentax booth had stated that the Pentax 645D would be released in the Spring of next year. Following the announcement of a Larger-Than-FF Leica S2 and rumours of Nikon MX, marketed as “Something BIG´´, this rumour has a fertile soil in Pentax users wanting to see Pentax make a move in the Pro market.

An article, translated from Japan also hints that the 645D is a larger priority for Pentax than 35mm digital format at the moment, and states that two new APS-C bodies can be expected from Pentax in the summer of next year. Pentax also aims to improve the quality of the APS-C images to match that of FF.

Pentax has demonstrated the new Pentax K-m camera on their Photokina 2008 booth that has been “blinged up´´ with Swarovski crystals. A pentax spokesperson declined to name a price for the camera and instead said photographers longing for the bling version should give them a call.

A similiar pink theme seems to be shown in the Pentax Japan home page.

Yesterday I shot a set of pictures for the home page of Hannu Pahajoki who is a candidate in a municipal election. Here’s a portraittaken of Hannu by the party, which I assume is used in their own advertisements. That particular picture had me tearing off my hair and reminds of all the stereotypes of a stuffed old politician (which my father is not . So we needed something a little more youthful and refreshing.

The Lutakko area and surroundings of the hightech Innova building in Jyväskylä, with the autumn colours and a traditional red brick industrial buildings, served as an excellent surroundings to present my father, who teaches building branch (construction) in a vocational school, in a more youthful setting. I attached the Sigma 24-60/2.8, ordered very cheap from the US, to my trusty Pentax K10D. The Sigma has not seen a lot of action yet, but this time the lens presented it’s best qualities in the great autumn light. I’m very satisfied with the pictures.
